How to Tell If a Coin Is Silver
You have a coin, it looks like silver, and you want to know for sure without wrecking it. There are five tests worth running, from the ones you can do at a kitchen table to the one you should never do at all. This guide walks through each — weight and density, the magnet, the ring, the hallmark, and the acid test — and then covers the part the generic "is it silver" articles get wrong: ancient coins do not behave like modern bullion, and testing them takes a different eye.
To tell if a coin is silver without damaging it, start with weight and density: real silver has a specific gravity of about 10.49, so weigh the coin and measure its volume by water displacement. Silver is not magnetic, rings with a long, clear tone when balanced and tapped, and on modern coins usually carries a fineness mark such as .925. Skip the acid test on anything collectible — it leaves a permanent mark. For ancient coins the kitchen tests are unreliable, because ancient silver is often debased, toned or plated; there, weight, specific gravity and an expert eye matter most.
What you'll need
Most of these tests need almost nothing. A scale accurate to 0.01 g, a small measuring cylinder or a cup of water on the same scale for the density test, a strong magnet, and a loupe or reading glasses for the hallmark. That is enough to reach a confident answer on almost any coin without touching it chemically. Keep the acid kit out of it unless the coin is scrap and you have already decided you do not care about its surface.
1. Weigh it and check the density
This is the single most useful non-destructive test, because density is a property of the metal itself. Silver has a specific gravity of about 10.49 — heavier than copper or nickel, lighter than gold or lead. Weigh the coin in grams, then measure its volume by water displacement (drop it into a graduated cylinder, or set a cup of water on the scale and note the weight change when the coin is suspended in it). Divide the mass by the volume and compare against 10.49. A modern coin that comes out close is very likely silver; one that lands around 8–9 is probably a copper-nickel or bronze piece dressed up to look like silver.
The catch is that density testing rewards precision. A worn, porous or corroded coin gives a false low reading, and a small coin magnifies every measurement error, so treat a borderline result as "needs more testing" rather than a verdict. Learning a coin's correct weight for its type is half the battle here, which is exactly the discipline the coin identification process builds.
2. The magnet test
Quick, free, and only good for ruling things out. Silver is not magnetic, so if a coin jumps to a magnet, it is not silver — you are looking at a plated or base-metal coin with iron or steel in it, and you can stop there. The reverse is not proof: plenty of non-silver metals (copper, brass, aluminium) are also non-magnetic, so a coin that ignores the magnet has merely passed the first gate, not the whole exam. Use the magnet to eliminate the obvious fakes fast, then move on.
3. The ring test
Silver has a distinctive voice. Balance the coin on the tip of a finger and tap its edge gently with another coin, and a solid silver piece rings with a long, clear, high-pitched tone that hangs in the air; base metal answers with a short, dull thud. It is a genuinely useful test on modern coins and a favourite of dealers who have heard thousands of them. Two warnings, though: the ring depends on the coin being intact, so a cracked, chipped or very thin flan will not sing even if it is silver, and a skilled ear is doing a lot of the work. It confirms; it rarely convicts on its own.
4. Look for a fineness mark
On modern coins, the metal is often stamped right on it. A fineness or purity mark — .925 for sterling, .999 for fine silver, sometimes a national hallmark — is a direct statement of what the coin is made of, and on bullion and many world coins it is the fastest answer there is. But read the absence carefully: most circulating silver coins and every ancient coin carry no such mark, so "no hallmark" does not mean "not silver". The mark is a bonus when it exists, not a requirement.
5. The acid test (last resort)
There is a chemical test — a drop of nitric acid or a proprietary silver solution reacts one colour on silver and another on base metal — and it is accurate. It is also destructive: it etches the surface and leaves a permanent mark. Never use it on a collectible, a coin with any numismatic value, or anything ancient. Reserve it for genuine scrap you intend to sell for melt, and even then, test on the edge. If you are tempted to acid-test a coin you think might be valuable, that temptation is the signal to stop and get it looked at professionally instead.
Ancient coins are different
Here is where the generic silver-testing advice falls apart, and it matters because a "silver" ancient coin is a very different animal from a modern bullion round. Three things break the home tests. First, ancient silver is often debased: Roman and Greek mints cut their silver with copper, sometimes heavily, so a genuine ancient "silver" coin can have a density and colour well off pure silver — that is not a fake, it is billon, a real historical alloy. Second, ancient coins carry no hallmarks at all, so that test is simply gone. Third, and most dangerous, is the fourrée: an ancient forgery made by plating a thin skin of silver over a base-metal core, which will pass a casual look and even a ring test until the plating breaks and the copper core shows through.
So for anything ancient or genuinely valuable, the sequence changes. Weight against the known standard for the type and a careful specific-gravity reading still help, but the real tools are a non-destructive XRF metal analysis — which any serious dealer can run — and, above all, a trusted attribution and provenance.
