Khosrow I Anushirvan, King of Kings of Iran
Khosrow I (Anūšīrwān, "of the Immortal Soul," in the Pahlavi tradition, and dādgar, "the Just," in the later Islamic one) succeeded his father Kavad I on 13 September 531 and held the throne for forty-eight years, the longest reign of any Sasanian king. The administrative substance of the reign is the recodification of the kharāj land-tax on a surveyed-and-assessed basis (replacing the older proportional levy) and the reorganisation of the army into four regional commands under spāhbeds, both reforms that the Abbasid chanceries of the eighth and ninth centuries still read as foundational. The coinage substance is narrower and sharper: the silver drachm of his reign is the first Sasanian issue to carry a regnal year alongside the mint signature, a documentary feature that turns every Khosrow I drachm into a coin datable to a single calendar year of his forty-eight.
The reign matters to numismatics on two distinct grounds. First, the introduction of consistent regnal-year dating on Khosrow I silver (yr 1 through yr 48, in Pahlavi numerals in the right reverse field beside the mint signature) produces what is, by surviving volume, the densest precisely datable coin series in pre-modern numismatics: every drachm is fixable to a single calendar year, which the Roman and Hellenistic coinages of comparable scale cannot match. Second, the visual template of the reign (mural crown with double-wing flanks, korymbos, fire-altar with two attendants, mint-and-year reverse) passes essentially unchanged to Hormazd IV, Khosrow II, the late Sasanian kings, and finally to the Arab-Sasanian governors who continued striking the same drachm types under their own names down to the early eighth century, making Khosrow I's silver the iconographic anchor of the eastern Mediterranean and Iranian monetary system across a span of more than a hundred and fifty years.

Khosrow I's silver inherits the mature Sasanian formula intact from his father (frontal bust right, korymbos and pearled diadem, two-attendant fire-altar reverse, Pahlavi mint and legend) and consolidates one documentary feature into the standard convention: a regnal year, in Pahlavi numerals, placed on the reverse beside the mint signature. The practice was used sporadically under Peroz I and made systematic under Kavad I (Khosrow's father, from regnal year 11 onward); Khosrow's contribution was to apply it uniformly across the full output of every mint for every year of the reign, and the convention so fixed is kept by every subsequent King of Kings down to Yazdegerd III. The year counts from his accession (yr 1 = AY 531/2) and runs through yr 48 (AY 578/9). The mature crown is Göbl's Type II for the reign: a mural crown surmounted by a crescent within a globe (the korymbos), flanked at the temples by stylised double wings sometimes read as eagle-pinions and sometimes as Mithraic rays. Output volume is the second-heaviest of the Sasanian series after Shapur II. The forty-eight-year baseline is what every other late-Sasanian reign is measured against at auction. Göbl's 1971 Sasanidische Numismatik provides the type framework and Nikolaus Schindel's SNS volumes (especially SNS Paris–Berlin–Wien IV, on the reign and its mints) provide the working die-corpus and the read on the more contested mint signatures; the Pahlavi numerals should be read in the original on any serious purchase, since misread regnal years are the simplest way to mis-date a coin by decades.

The Pahlavi regnal year in the right reverse field is the single most informative attribute on a Khosrow I drachm, and the reign organises most cleanly by year-vintage rather than by mint or grade — a specific year reads at a documentary premium independent of strike quality. Catalogue work runs against Göbl 1971 and SNS Paris–Berlin–Wien IV (Schindel), with no internal NumisLens record for the Sasanian sequence to lean on. Year 1 through about year 12 (AD 531/2 – 543/4) is the early-reign vintage, struck under the Eternal Peace and through the resumption of war: heavy, well-styled, $120–$250 in VF at CNG, Künker, Roma, and the dedicated Iranian sales at Stack's Bowers and Morton & Eden. Years 12–30 (covering the 543 plague years, the sack of Antioch's aftermath, and the Lazic War) are the abundant working middle of the reign and the entry point, at $80–$180 in VF for common Ctesiphon and Weh-Antiok-Khosrow strikes. Years 30–48 (the late reign, narrower output, eastern-mint emphasis) carry a scarcity premium, with Marw, Balkh, and Herat issues in particular reaching $300–$700 in VF. Specific historical years (yr 12 for the plague, yr 31 for the Fifty Years' Peace, the late Yemeni-expedition years) carry a documentary premium independent of grade. Bronze pashiz is widely available at $30–$80 and rarely catalogued by year; the gold dinar is a four- to low-five-figure event and a known examples list, not a price band.

Khosrow I silver is the most liquid material in the Sasanian market: dozens of drachms cross the major Iranian-focused sales every month, weighted heavily toward middle-reign Ctesiphon and Weh-Antiok-Khosrow output. The regnal-year feature creates a parallel sub-market: year-specific drachms are bought as documentary anchors by collectors who would otherwise have no interest in a mid-Sasanian portrait, and a clean yr 12 (AD 543, the plague year) or yr 31 (AD 562, the Fifty Years' Peace) reads at a noticeable premium over a neighbouring year of identical grade. Cross-collector demand is unusually broad: Sasanian specialists, Byzantine-Justinianic collectors reading the coin as the obverse of the sixth-century wars, and provenance-driven buyers reading it as the most-attested face of the Procopian source tradition. Provenance from the named twentieth-century Sasanian cabinets (Sunrise, Saeedi, Mochiri) lifts hammer prices durably, particularly on the late-reign eastern mints where attribution itself is the contested margin.
