About This Type
This RIC I (second edition) Nero 597 is a dupondius of Nero (62 AD-68 AD), struck at the Lugdunum mint. The reverse depicts Securitas, bare to waist, seated right, on throne, resting head against right hand and holding short sceptre in left; in front, lighted and garlanded altar, on which leans lighted torch resting on a bucranium. Struck in bronze at a standard weight of 12.59g, 28mm diameter.
About the Dupondius
The dupondius was a Roman orichalcum (brass) coin worth two asses, typically 12–14 grams and 25–29mm. It is distinguished from the as by the emperor's radiate crown and the use of brass rather than copper.
